Cliftonville Golf Club Celebrates Historic Victory in the 2025 Senior Men’s Inter-Club Competition
Cliftonville Golf Club has won the Golf Ireland Senior Men’s Inter-Club competition. This remarkable achievement marks our very first Golf Ireland competition win in 39 years —a true testament to the dedication and talent within our club. Heartfelt congratulations go to team captain Karl Donaghy and his entire squad for their outstanding performance and commitment. This is a milestone in the club’s history, and we could not be more proud of our team’s exceptional accomplishment.
The journey started back in May with a 3&1 win over the Hilton. We then beat the 2024 champions Carrickfergus with a 3&1 scoreline. Next up was a meeting with Ballycastle and of course we beat them 3&1. This is when things started to get serious and tough. In July, after a terrific battle with Ballyclare we scrapped over the line with a 2.5 to 1.5 win. In the semi-final, we were up against Letterkenny and after all four matches ended it was all-square at 2 each. Step up Mr Magnificant Alan V. Porter and his lucky mascot dog Charlie, who sunk the winning putt (Alan, not Charlie) on the first play-off hole.
Then onto the final against Bright Castle. A huge number of supporters from the club came to watch our team, and there were some amazing shots, too many to mention, but Raymond Smith’s putt on the 11th pitch hole broke his opponents hearts, as did Club Captain Gervais Henderson’s up and down at the short 8th hole. And it was that man again Alan Porter whose conceded putt got us over the line with a 3&1 win. Let us all celebrate this momentous occasion together — well done, Cliftonville!
